10.1.1903 Born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England (UK)


Barbara Hepworth is one of the twentieth century´s most important and influential sculptors

she received scholarships to both Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London
1921 Awarded a county major scholarship and begins studies in sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London

1924 she was shortlisted for the Prix de Rome, alongside fellow sculptor John Skeaping, who not only won the competition, but was to become Hepworth´s first husband

1931 She met the painter Ben Nicholson, whom she later married

Joins the Seven and Five Society and exhibits until its demise in 1936

1933 Visits Paris with Ben Nicholson and meets Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, and Constantin Brancusi

1935 Meets Naum Gabo and Piet Mondrian in Paris

1938 Marries Ben Nicholson (ends in 1951)


In the late thirties she and Nicholson were part of an important group of modernist artists, living in Hampstead, London, which included Henry Moore, Naum Gabo and Piet Mondrian
1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War, Hepworth and Nicholson moved to St Ives, Cornwall. Barbara was deeply affected by the place and it remained her home until she died

1949 Founds Penwith Society for Arts in Cornwall

1951 Buys Trewyn Studio and moves there permanently

1958 Receives CBE in New Year´s Honours List

1964 Becomes a Trustee of the Tate Gallery, London

1966 Diagnosed with throat cancer, cared for by specialist Stanley Lee, at Westminster Hospital

1968 Awarded Honorary Degree from University of Oxford

1975 Opening of Barbara Hepworth Museum, St Ives, Cornwall
