Enrico Castellani studied painting and sculpture in Brussels. He later shifted his interest to architecture, entering the Ecole Nationale Sup`erieure de la Cambre, Belgium, in 1956. In collaboration with experimental artist Piero Manzoni, Castellani established an avant-garde publication "Azimuth" in 1959, and opened an art gallery of the same name. Though his name had become well known by the 1960s through exhibitions such as Documenta in 1968, Castellani halted his activities in the 1970s due to political constraints in Italy. Enrico Castellani's exploration of space and time is reflected in his canvases, behind which he hits nails to give the uniform-colored canvas a three-dimensional surface that appears like waves of shadow. The effect is referred to as "a painting of light," and, in fact, the works are more object than pure art.
