1957 Born in Bristol (UK)

Garry Fabian Miller grew up at Clevedon on the Severn Estuary. His first body of work, The Sea Horizon, was made from the roof of his parent's house in 1976: a series of 40 photographs of the sea and the sky taken with the fixed constants of camera, lens and exposure and the ever changing variables of time and the weather. It sounds very simple, but their cumulative effect is a complex one: a detailed exploration of the nature of time and place and light, especially light.

Since 1985, Miller's medium has been light itself, dispensing with a camera to make work that looks back to the first principles of photography - working in the dark, passing light through objects such as leaves and flowers or filters of oil or coloured water. He can't see what is happening: each work is an act of faith guided only by his knowledge and experience of work he has made before.

Miller has exhibited extensively across Europe and America with over 30 solo exhibitions to his name and he has work in many public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Cleveland Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Tracing Light, a book inspired by Miller's 1999 residency at Petworth House, with an extensive text by David Mellor, has recently been published by Photoworks. A retrospective monograph is planned for publication in the near future. Exhibitions are currently being planned for the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and another to tour museums in America.
