Biography:
1984 Born in Venice (IT)
Giulia Magnaguagno graduated from Milan's IULM university for Translators and Interpreters. Her cheerful personality makes her love life, travelling and exploring her surroundings.
Photography has always been her longstanding passion and point of reference.
She travelled to Madrid and studied at one of the most important photography schools in Spain -a pivotal experience in terms of personal artistic development, and a full immersion into another culture and lifestyle. Experiencing day to day life from a different perspective has allowed her, with her snapshots, to "seize the moment".
She then returned to Italy andattended her final year at the ACT Multimedia cinema school, at Cinecittą Studios in Rome, studying as Director of Photography.
Giulia is now making short films and artistic projects working as Assistant Director for the Pupi Avati film, set to debut in Spring 2009.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Femi ninity, in Giulia Magnaguagno's work, is pure and mysterious. It unfolds through body language. Her photographs,e taken using film in high key, portray the woman as an elegant style icon, a femme fatale, a mysterious seductress whose apparent erotic nudity hides a profoundly expressive soul.
The model and intense light mergemaking the pallor of her skin barely perceivable, only in the areas of shade.
The delicacy of their translucent skin is vaguely reminiscent of oriental beauties, evoking the figure of the geisha.
The high key technique puts light in the forefront. It creates a play of light and dark contrasts which bring out the model's body silhouette. Chromatic contrasts between elements like the gloves, the black hair, an intense look or red lips are so vivid that even the less evident traits can be picked up like a fine hair texture or the soft glossy fabric of velvet gloves.
Great attention goes not only into an accurate study of light and anatomy but also to the model's pose whichis never casual but is masterfully explored depending on the light and on the framing of the photos.
The feminine model depicted by the artist is no doubt a woman of the 20s who masterfully plays with her mature allure while simultaneously seducing with her disarming Lolita-like air.
