1904 Born in Mühlheim/Ruhr (DE)
Heinrich Siepmann (born in 1904) was one of a few contemporary artists still working at an advanced age with impressive creative vigor. Siepmann was a founding member of the artists´ group "junger westen" in Recklinghausen, Germany in 1948. Initially he painted gestural pictures based on psychic improvisation which are classified as Art Informel. Later he began using clearly defined geometrical forms in his painting. Since the 70´s, his paintings had continuously become more severe but in the 90´s they became more colourful and lyrical. The collages of Heinrich Siepmann were autonomous experiments exploring structures of form and colour.
The artist on his work:
"I build my pictures beginning at a geometric-constructive starting-point with the diagonal having a special function. Colour has a contrapuntal function, placed within a scale of grey and white shades. Analytical considerations and remaining open to evocative possibilities during the work process determine my work."
