Biography:
1928 Born in (JP)
Having studied traditional Japanese painting, Hisao Domoto moved to France in 1955 where he became a follower of the art Informel. Domoto held his first solo exhibition at Minami Gallery, Tokyo, in 1960 when he returned temporarily to Japan. From around this time, he came to a clear awareness that he was Japanese. "Solutions de Continuités" is one of the 13 pieces which were exhibited in the 1964 Venice Biennale and for which he received a prize there. With this series, Domoto departed from his Informel-style painting, and established his own style. Sometimes using goldleaf, Domoto paints strong, even black strokes onto a red lacquered canvas. In his later works, he changed his motif to circles and waves, and shifted from oil to acrylic. However, the tension that exists in all of his paintings never fades.
