Biography:
16.5.1960 Born in Bogotá (CO)
Nadín Ospina's latest series consists of statues based on North American cartoon figures. Mickey Mouse, The Simpsons, Cartman and Goofy, all are immortalised in a pose reminiscent of the strong, direct and timeless statues of the pre-Colombian period.
Ospina´s statues are created by means of a very precise technique, copying the old pre-Colombian process. They are visibly covered in fissures and cracks, and the colour is intentionally faded in order to simulate the weathered appearance of antique pre-Colombian artifacts.
In turn, this aging process is used with the utmost aesthetic meticulousness, establishing an artistic or anthropological space.
By virtue of all these qualities, the exhibits create a strange sense of timelessness, an air of solemnity and irony, playfully tackling the subject of the real and the artificial.
With titles like Dignatario (Dignatory) 1999, y Crítico (Critic) 1993, and the serialisation of the Simpson characters, among others, Ospina surpasses the comical allusion of these North American icons. He is far more concerned with addressing serious issues such as the controversy between the unique artifact and the mass produced, between originality and commercialism, the sacred and the everyday, the past and the present, the popular and the elite, the ephemeral and the constant. He is equally preoccupied with the systematic breakdown of Colombia's identity.
Pre-Colombian art has been so avidly collected that demand has paved the way for mass reproduction and fakes. This has seriously interfered with the comprehensive study of a rich and ancient culture. Likewise, mass media and communication have given birth to the new gods and idols for today's society.
By recreating these instantly recognisable icons, Ospina is mimicking a society hungry for an identity; an identity which they neither understand nor question. Through his works, Ospina is urging the Colombians, the world, to revaluate their cultures.
