Biography:
23.9.1897 Born in Antheit, Wanze, WLG (BE)
Paul Delvaux attended the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts. His early paintings were in the Post Impressionist style, however when he saw paintings by René Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico in 1934, his vision changed to embrace Surrealism. He joined the Belgian Surrealists in 1937, and exhibited in the 1938 International Surrealist exhibition in Paris.
Delvaux´s paintings are highly realistic, presenting melancholic and nostalgic scenes of frozen action. The pictorial stage is populated with semi- clothed or nude women painted with great precision and realism displaying themselves in inappropriate settings such as train stations, usually at night . A professorial male figure often lurks at the periphery of the scene. Adding to the strange atmosphere is an abundance of detail in every part of the painting, details of objects that seem to bear no information. Once he found this personal idiom his style changed very little throughout his working career.
