Biography:
1922 Born in Syracuse, NY (US)
Postwar artist Robert De Niro, Sr. reconciled American and European abstraction with his interest in figurative compositions and still lifes. His work reflects a classicizing influence and references French painters as diverse as Derain, Matisse, Soutine, and Bonnard, as well as his teachers Hans Hofmann and Josef Albers. The result is a sea of lyrical lines, thick and thin, forming archetypal figures against luminous color fields that the The New Yorker calls "strikingly confident."
In the early 1960s De Niro abandoned New York for Paris. There, and back in New York City, he evolved his mature style and sold hundreds of works to the collector Joseph Hirshhorn. Museum collections include the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others. Hackett-Freedman Gallery's recent De Niro's exhibiton in 2000 was done with the assistance of Salander O'Reilly Galleries of New York City.
