8.1.1900 Born in Moskwa (RU)
Russian-French painter. A talented musician, nephew of the singer Nadia Poliakoff, the two went to Constantinople in 1919, when forced to leave Russia by the Revolution. He went on a number of European tours with his aunt and finally settled in Paris in 1923. For the next twenty years he earned his living as a cabaret guitarist. He began painting at the age of twenty-four and for a few years gained instruction from various sources including the Slade School of Art in London. His early works are figurative in content, but after meeting Kandinsky in 1937, and becoming a close friend of Sonia Delaunay, he began to work in an abstract style.
His first one-man show was in 1945 in Paris, and he was awarded the Kandinsky prize in 1947. He grew to gain a leading position among the abstract painters of the Ecole de Paris in the 1950s. He was essentially a colourist, and his works have little visible sign of conventional picture space or geometric linear design. His paintings were very much objects in themselves, a product of his artistic approach which involved manufacture of his own colours and a concentration on technique and paint application.
Poliakoff also made a number of lithographs which, like his paintings, involved carefully positioned areas of intuitional, brilliant colour. He was little affected by the ideas of the time which questioned the validity of paintings as art objects. His work was given a retrospective exhibition at Berne in 1960 and upon his death in 1969 the Whitechapel Art Gallery gave him an exhibition.
