1936 Born in Nagoya (JP)

Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1938, Shusaku Arakawa has lived and worked in New York since 1961. Having met Madeline Gins in 1962, Arakawa started on a series of works in various media titled "The Mechanism of Meaning," which reflect on human sensory skills, and particularly how matters achieve their meaning. The series included two-dimensional objects consisting of letters and numbers geometrically composed. Shusaku Arakawa has received international acclaim since exhibiting at Documenta in 1968. His work has been widely introduced in Japan, and includes a solo exhibition at Seibu Museum of Art, Tokyo, in 1988. In 1994, a permanent installation was placed at the Nagi Museum of Contemporary Art, Okayama; the installation was created to be perceived by all five senses.

Arman (1928-)
Born in Nice, France, Arman [Ferdinande]'father was an immigrant from North Africa, who owned an antique furniture store. In 1949, Arman moved to Paris where he began to paint in a surrealistic style. Having gone to Kurt Schwitters' exhibition in 1954, he began to work on the stamp series the following year. He then worked with common objects like shoes, bottle caps, telephones, and musical instruments, going through the process of decomposing, collecting and recomposing them. In 1960 he filled Galerie Iris Clert with trash in an exhibition "Le Plein." Two days later, on October 27, he signed an oath on Nouveau Realism at the house of Yves Klein. (Arman met Klein in their teens at a judo class in Nice; Klein is said to have introduced Arman to art.) "Garbage Pièce" holds garbage in a plexiglass box. What has been consumed and discharged by consumers are the components of the work. Through the work, Arman not only presents the production/consumption structure of society, but questions the relationship between matter and man.
