 Biography:  Please report missing Information

1946 Born in San Francisco, CA (US)

Thomas Joshua Cooper has made Scotland his home for many years, having founded the Department of Photography at Glasgow School of Art in 1982.

Cooper is one of the most celebrated and distinctive landscape photographers working anywhere in the world today, yet his is not purely a contemporary idiom. Something in his work looks back to America's early photographers, particularly to Timothy H. O'Sullivan in the 1860's, and Cooper himself uses a large field camera that is now 102 years old.

His work begins with a location found on a map, tracked down and then photographed, each site the subject of a single frame. They are meditative, almost philosophical images exquisitely printed in the nineteenth century manner with layers of silver and gold chloride.
