Biography:
1965 Born in Hastings (UK)
An established painter and photographer, he regularly exhibits his work internationally, and has received numerous commissions for private and public collections. His works are often highly coloured, employing many layers of thin varnish-like layers to achieve a rich and striking image. Ayres has a 'catch all' approach to imagery, where text, portraits, road maps, geometrical abstractions and (recently) elements of erotica all play a role in his wide and fascinating idiom. A central theme in his work is a question of recognisibility. What do we see when we see, what do we read when we read and what do we hear when we hear. The works are about the possibilities in our response to what we recognise. The works are hand-painted, employing a mixture of brush and roller.
