Biography:
24.6.1936 Born in Kyongnam (KR)
Ufan Lee interrupted his studies at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul University, to move to Japan and study at Nihon University. He has remained in Japan ever since. His art and the theories he held established him as a leader of the Mono-ha movement. Lee works with stone, wood and metal, placing them as if haphazardly, Through the relationship between the works -- or between the spaces in which they are placed -- he recreates the world. "From Point" and "From Line" are his major painting series: they transcend the subjective point of view, with the canvas serving as a place from which the viewer can experience "the world as it is." In 1991, he had a solo exhibition at Hara Museum ARC.
Awards 2001 Awarded the Praemium Imperiale prize for painting.
