Biography: 
1957 Born in Utrecht, UT (NL)
1975 - 1980 Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam
His principal instructor there was Jan van der Vaart. Initially, Dam made simple pot shapes decorated with austere colours. It was from this basic form that his work developed further. The first step was to make the pots larger and lay them on their sides. The next development was the removal of the bottom, which left an autonomous form.
Even for these new objects, however, the pot form remained the point of departure for Dam and it remains more or less recognisable. In this way his forms occupy the interface between function and sculpture. This approach was a conscious choice on the part of Dam.
