Biography:
1904 Born in Tokyo (JP)
Yoshishige Saito is a pioneer of post-war Japanese abstract painting. Born in Tokyo, Saito began painting in the 1930s and was influenced by Russian Constructivism and Dadaism. Yet it was only after the war when Saito became widely recognized due to works such as "Work 14", in which he makes incisions onto a metal panel and then sometimes combines the metal pieces to produce relief-like objects. In the 1980s Saito experimented with other materials, such as in his various wood installations. Sato participated in the 1964 Venice Biennale as well as numerous other international exhibitions.
