Although formal analysis of visual art has traditionally been developed around two-dimensional pictorial space and three-dimensional sculptural space, creative artists have also constantly traversed these two visual fields, seeking for inspiration and opportunities to expand their artistic language. Thus Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel murals have been related to his powerful sculptures, and marvelous paintings and statues together shape a Dunhuang cave-temple. Such practices demonstrate that the forms and concepts of 2D and 3D are perpetually interdependent and interpenetrating in art history.

PKM Gallery is proud to present "2D/3D: Negotiating Visual Languages," its first group show of Chinese contemporary art curated by Wu Hung that explores these very themes. Stimulated by new visual techniques such as photography, video, installation, and multi-media art, contemporary artists have become more accustomed to create works in versatile forms, yet 2D and 3D remains two basic operative grounds for visual art, and their relationship in contemporary art has not been seriously discussed. Featuring works by 12 contemporary Chinese artists, this exhibition aims to foreground this important practical and theoretical issue.

Each artist has shown consistent interest in generating dialogue between 2D and 3D forms. Their works in this exhibition demonstrate different kinds of artistic creativities involved in developing this dialogue.
