Andrea BŁttner - On The Spot # 1

28.09. - 18.11.2007

Opening: Thursday 27 September, 7:00 p.m.

Press conference: 26 September, 11 a.m.

With On The Spot, a new exhibition level is being opened in the inner courtyard of the Kunstverein. For this exhibition series, artists or curators are invited to realize their projects in an intensive encounter with the on-site spatial relationships.

The first solo exhibition of On The Spot presents a space-encompassing installation by Andrea BŁttner, an artist living in London. In addition to drawing and silkscreen, BŁttner mainly utilizes the technique of woodcut. Precisely the supposed antiquity of this medium - as well as the artistic tradition which it evokes - refers to a fundamental question which runs through the work of this artist: How is it possible to comprehend or to describe the threshold which is occupied by an artwork between the intimate practice of production and the public practice of exhibitions? BŁttner's works thematize not only questions of individual surrender, failure and shame, but also the exemplary, utopian imagination of life-forms operating beyond these feelings of inadequacy. For the spaces, BŁttner has come up with a special variant of the wall displays which she has already used in other exhibitions for her so-called shit spaces: A brown coat of paint - as high as her raised arm - runs around the entire inner courtyard. A spatial body which harbors the works that were created and selected for this exhibition.
