Best known for her high-keyed abstractions, Angela Brennan's work includes portraits and landscapes. These varied modes of art-making allow Brennan to encounter philosophical and personal subject matter. In her latest body of work, Brennan has incorporated fragments of text, short sentences as well as longer passages in an idiosyncratic fusion that is somewhere between Colin McCahon's religious ferocity and the commonplace humility contained within a hand written note. Brennan presents to the viewer a range of ideas and emotions that seek a reaction whether it is affirmation, intrigue or misunderstanding. This new series incorporates Brennan's mastery of colour and spontaneity while presenting the viewer with an intellectual and emotional challenge.Angela Brennan has been awarded studio residencies in Spain, France and China. Her work is represented in major public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia and the World Bank Collection, New York. Angela lives and works in Melbourne. |
