Arnold Newman . Masterclass
A person’s entire life represented by a single picture—Arnold Newman (1918–2006) was a master of revealing the biography in the facial expression of his sitter. With great sensitivity and care, he incorporated the personal environment, the work, and the intellectual background in his photographs. For Newman, portraiture was a process over time, a question of camera, lighting, film, and the right cropping of a picture. His metaphorical studies of famous artists, creative professionals, scientists, intellectuals, athletes, and statesmen are formally and conceptually balanced compositions. With the visual concept of his “environmental portraits,” the American photographer Arnold Newman set high artistic and aesthetic standards starting in the late 1930s.

Masterclass comprises 200 vintage black-and-white photographs from the oeuvre of one of the most influential portrait photographers of the twentieth century. The exhibition at C/O Berlin includes Arnold Newman’s most famous portraits but also early street photography, architectural studies, many still lifes, as well as contact sheets with zoom and cropping marks that have never been shown before publicly—a portraiture lesson by Arnold Newman who told his students to look around, in the streets, at exhibitions and at books. The retrospective has been curated by William A. Ewing for the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography and will start its world wide tour at C/O Berlin. The Harry Ransom Center is partner of the exhibition. Weberbank sponsors and The Mandala Hotel, Dinamix and taz support the retrospective.
