212Gallery is proud to present new paintings by Caio Fonseca (American, b.1959). The exhibition will be on view from 16 February to 15 April 2013. A reception for the Artist will be held Thursday 21 February from 6 - 9pm.
Fonseca has expanded on a new body of work, using a freshly invented visual language. Irreducible forms unfold with a playful yet rigorous architecture. One form through its placement creates the form beside it, which in turn creates the next- activating vertical and horizontal forces at play in an inventive, processional sense of movement. Working in both large-scale and intimate formats, these new paintings collectively advance a bold and distilled vision.
Caio Fonseca's paintings have been exhibited internationally and are held in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His work was presented in museum retrospectives at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM), in Valencia, Spain. Fonseca's paintings belong to the permanent collections of, among others, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Fonseca lives and works in Manhattan, and since 1985 has maintained a studio in Pietrasanta (Lucca). For the last 5 years he has been studying classical music composition. For the last two summers he has worked in Aspen, Colorado. |
