PRESS RELEASE

We.re delighted to invite you to the next solo show by Carlos Correia (1975). The artist presents "Ensaio", his second solo show at Baginski, Galeria / Projectos.

In this show, the artist presents some of his most recent works of the „exterior painting. series, mapping our visible world, history (of art and of cinema), daily like and it.s multiple visual influences.

With this series, the artist concentrates on images that he understands like an echo to the visual, exterior world. They are created in a confrontation of images and references with the most diverse heritage. Most of the time, this paintings exist as a series, but they also do function on their own.

In between this vast universe of recollected, imagined and reorganized images, comes up the idea of Mnemosyne; Aby Warburg.s big project of constructing an encyclopedia of images from all epochs and cultures, that was never finished. The painting of Carlos Correia also is a recollection of images, on his own terms, with images from the older art history, with references from Venus de Urbino by Titian to Manet.s Olympia, until the most recent one - modern and contemporary, like Duchamp and Richter, as well as references to cinematographic culture, again, the older as well as most recent one.

Carlos Correia was born in 1975 in Lisbon, where he continues to live and work. He began his career in the beginning of the 21th century, developing a line of investigation that continues through his recent works. He researches other media, the internet and television, or publicity. With their every-day-images, they serve the artists purpose of questioning the presentation of identity.

His most recent solo shows in 2009 were, between others "Moon and something else…" at Pedro Oliveira Gallery, Oporto, and "Pintura (Painting)" at Nogueira da Silva Museum in Braga, Portugal. In 2008 he presented "Project" (curated by Adriano Pedrosa) at Gallery Luísa Strina in São Paulo, Brasil. In 2007, he had several solo shows: at Pedro Oliveira Gallery in Oporto, at Baginski - Gallery / Projects in Lisbon, as well as at exhibition space ArteContempo (curated by Filipa Oliveira and Miguel Amado).

From his several participations in group shows, we draw attention to 2009 "Desenhos [Drawings] A-Z.
Colecção Madeira Corporate Service" no Museu da Cidade, Lisboa (curated by Adriano Pedrosa), "Pavilhão de Portugal" at Hangart 7 in Salzburg (curated by Lioba Reddeker) and "Opções e Fúturos. Obras da Colecção da Fundação PLMJ" at the City Museum Lisbon (Museu da Cidade, curated by Miguel Amado). In 2008 he participated, between others, in the show "Imágenes Latentes" at Galeria Fucares, Madrid.

The work of the artist is found in private and public Portuguese collections, as the PLMJ Foundation, the Ílidio Pinho Foundation, the António de Almeida Foundation and the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, between others.
