From Novmber 5the to December 30th, 2008
OPENING, Wendsday November 5th from 8 to 10 pm
The Gallery Luis Adelantado is pleased to announce the opening of the first solo show of the argentinean artist Carlos Huffmann (Buenos Aires, 1981), another new asset of the Gallery after his appearance at the 2006 Call for new artists.
In his last work, which is mainly pictorial but with a clear and strong approach to installation and sculpture, we can find a pronounced tension between the world´s texture and the diagrams of language.
His personal fantasy, half way between isolated reality and fiction, show us characters that look like out of a contemporary battlefield, where monsters, skulls, dismember bodies and scattered intestines run with the teen and masculine iconography of the car magazines, cyberpunk culture, last generation videogames, fantastic and horror movies and their creepy special effects…
To put into context the distressing work of Huffmann is interesting to know his closer influences, as he tell us himself: "at this moment I think my influences are Paul McCarthy and Marcelo Pombo. I like to work with surrealism like Mike Kelley´s way, which comes with an interest for Georges Bataille. I like that in McCarthy´s work the ketchup is blood, but it´s still ketchup, it comes out of a Heinz bottle. I´m also enthusiastic about Capitalism and Schizophrenia from Guattari y Deleuze, it comes really handy their critical version of psychology when I think about my work. It gives me tools to develop and defend an idea of an arwork in which the investigation of the personal structure and subjective is a powerful (if not the only) political tool.
During the period between 1998 and 2002, Carlos Huffmann studies at the same time Business Economy at the University Torcuato Di Tella, and Art at the studios of: Fabiana Barreda, Diana Aisenberg, Mónica Girón, Pablo Siquier, Miguel Harte. In 2003 he develops various shows, including a performance-installation at the young space of Ruth Benzacar in ArteBA, y one individual in Belleza y Felicidad. At the end of 2003 he joins the Master of Fine Arts at Calarts, Los Angeles, USA. He shows in Art 2102 and in two community shows in Los Angeles. After finishing the master course he comes back to Argentina in August 2005, where he´s actually living. After joining the Galeria Luis Adelantado in 2006 he has taken part in several international art fairs from our hand, and also in group exhibitions like Blemish and Vicio, both in our branch in Miami.
