This timely survey, beginning in the early twentieth century, attempts to address the use of text in modern and contemporary fine art as not simply the development of a formal property shared by a multitude of practitioners. Rather, it aims to present the appearance of text as representing a fundamental conceptual shift in art practise, wherein the production, motives and intent of works may be seen to be in part, of wholly, founded upon a linguistic basis. ...*
