SPECTA presents its first solo show by Daniel Svarre. Focusing on the hard masculine expression and solidarity which is found among some groups of young men with a hiphop-attitude, the exhibition "Sons" deal with aspects of the cross point between the common identity of the group and the surrounding society.
Sculpture and photography will be on show.
Daniel Svarre's main motif is a masculine group identity which holds both solidarity, a safe haven and confidentality, but at the same time these groups can seem aggressive and excluding. The exhibition deals with the kind of masculinity which appears to be in opposition to society yet it is part of the masculinity occuring in e.g. film, fashion and media.
At first sight the sculpture "Mannequin" seems to be a mannequin. But in this case the mannequin has two back sides (no front) and fists without thumbs. Hereby the obvious idea of the mannequin as a figure for identification is disturbed, and "Mannequin" shows a stationary but pent up - aggressive - state.
"Shadow" is reminiscent to earlier works by Daniel Svarre - here five black suits make up a group, appearing as standing shadows. The sculpture places itself in the crossing of fear of the unknown group and the desire to be part of it.
The new photographic series by Daniel Svarre, entitled "Sons 1-6" are individual portraits of young men hanging out in surburbia. The photos have been taken with long exposure and depict the seconds where the individuals turn their faces away from each other and towards the viewer. It is during these seconds where the eyes of the group meet the viewer (a bypasser) and the world around them. Hereby the portraits in one moment define both the group and the individual, and the division between the group and the surrounding society.
The exhibition "Sons" is supported by the Danish Arts Council Committee for International Visual Art and The National Workshops for Arts and Crafts
