The central theme of Dirk Baumanns works is man in his surrounding environment. His abstract and expressive modern contemporary artwork shows life and death of mankind and his environment, where in the tree plays a central role for human kind to develop and survive. Tree and men form a symbiotic relationship. Only within these bonds humans can live because the tree retrieves carbon dioxide out of the air and give back valuable oxygen. The tree has all qualities that man desires: in spite of the effect of weather, the tree will produce fruit up to old age, will survive difficult times through a continuous regeneration. The roots will always somehow channel their way through difficult and hard grounds. Therefor the tree represents vitality and can outlive human life.
Dirk Baumanns demonstrates in his works often mankind existentially bonded with a tree. The human figures usually are floating in their environment and sometimes are only grounded by holding the roots or the branches of trees.
The tree reveals natural events such as growth, flourishing, ripening, carrying fruits and finally wilting and decaying. Mankind floats seemingly unconcerned in a destroyed environment and will not notice how everything around him is perishing.
The paintings created by Dirk Baumanns can be recognized by a pastose application of colorful oil paint, with fine and visible brush strokes.
The same structure of color is applied to resemble the image of the air, the tree, human skin etc.
The intense glowing colors obtain plasticity and appear to be scintillating and vibrating.
Curves, swellings and air circulations seem statically charged.
Bright intense colors burst out of the earth, rocks, trees and human figures, which demonstrate vividness and vitality as well as pulsating life and the dynamics of time, the cycle of growth and decay.
