Do que nos lembramos quando nos lembramos de nos (What do we remember when we remember us) Duarte Amaral Netto presents his first solo show at Baginski, Galeria / Projectos.
In Do que nos lembramos quando nos lembramos de nos (What do we remember when we remember us) Duarte Amaral Netto presents a new series of works, whose point of departure is the artist.s interest in family photographies and memory. And therefore the question that arises before these works is the following: how do we remember, and how can we represent that idea? The new photographies appear ghostly and time-consumed and thus contradict their contemporaneity and speak to another era while some details push us, surprisingly back to the present. (Space 51)
Duarte Amaral Netto (1976) actually lives and works in Lisbon. He began to study arts at the end of the 1990.s with a special study program in Photography at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (Curso Fotografia Programa Criatividade e Criacao Artistica da Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian), afterwards followed by a photography course at Arco, a private Arts school in Lisbon. He got important art grants and prices as the Kodak Grant (2000) or the Great Award from the 48th Montrouge Salon in Paris. His work develops around the study of daily life as a cinematographic object, as a stage of scene where light, color and composition are meticulously manipulated. The silence, the absence and an idea of emptiness have been important factors for Duarte Amaral Netto.s work. He initiated his career in 1999, presenting his work since then in several individual as well as group shows. He showed already at several national and international venues, like the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the National Museum Soares dos Reis in Oporto, or the MK Gallery in Rotterdam, between others. He has already participated in several art fairs as ARCO in Madrid, Art Forum in Berlin or Art Cologne.
His works are represented in some of the most important private and public collections in Portugal, between them the BES Photo Collection. |
