Eleni Kotsoni presents the installation "DOM" in her new solo exhibition at a.antonopoulou.art gallery. The opening will take place on September 14th.
The "DOM" is a meteor set structured from small artistic objects, exposed along the gallery and manages to "root", to take a specific form and to become a place.
It is a site specific reconstruction of the gallery's exhibition area through objects - fetishes, drawings and paintings. The title refers to the dome like a shelter and a refuge and implies the relation of art and worship.
Eleni Kotsoni in order to create the "DOM", is inspired from architectonical constructions like the Haus Tambaran in Oceania and the House of Words (Toguna) in Mali. These archetypal places built at the highest point of the settlements, are designed with respect to the body of the primitive woman and only accept the grown up men of the race. They are meeting points, destined for rest, rituals, initiation, as well as for war preparations. The cultural tradition, along with relics and art are also housed in these places.
Eleni Kotsoni is inspired from the history of these public houses that somehow have an impressive completeness and where psychoanalysis, psychedelia and the spirit of the ancestors coexist with art, politics and science. With the free representation of this exotic atmosphere, according to the artist, the artistic construction attempts to restructure every day materials and to give them a new substance.
The "DOM" seems to sabotage the technology. It uses the culture's remnants and the nature's fossils in order to search for the place itself as an experienced reality, but also as a form of cohabitation. The material world is not reconstructed with the contribution of evolution, but with the contribution of illusion. |
