212GALLERY is pleased to present NOMADS, a series of eight sculptural works and three Limited edition Lithographs by Guy Dill.
Guy Dill is one of the world's contemporary masters of abstract sculptural works. While drawing upon the vocabularies developed by Anthony Caro and David Smith for the construction of welded geometric form, Dill has forged new terrain. The geometric building blocks that form the beginning of his vocabulary - slabs, squares, cutout circles, and beams - transcend rectalinearity. Choosing organic vitality over a strict adherence to pure geometry, Dill continues to eschew the strict vertical/horizontal coordinates and right-angle junctions that are critical to locking compositions together, orienting them to the ground. Dill's works celebrate movement.
Those works that are joined in nestled compositions, interact at angles that further suggest kinetic flow. Like dancers, his welded geometric sculptures twist, bend, reach, and unfold. Movement abounds, even in large powerful works that lock onto the ground with a wide-spread stance. Dill balances metaphors of figurative action and poise with the modern heavy-metal world of industrialism. To witness a Dill sculpture is to observe rhythm, silhouette and interaction. Symmetry and balance. The beautifully blended edges; surfaces polished to a pristine finish, mask the sheer physicality of the artists' creation. Dill's prints, subtle and delicate as his sculptures are solid, allude to the forms and shapes that constitute the core of his art.
While his works are not always large in actual size, they project a self-confident sense of scale even if physically intimate. Dill's industrial works engage the environment in which they exist, continually redefining space and context.
