Working with video, sculpture, light and sound, Mirza creates large scale installations that draw upon a myriad of influences including historical aural traditions, science, religious faith and club culture and examines their relationship to music. Mirza's works are both sculptural installations and sonic compositions that use ready-mades such as furniture, household electronics, found or constructed video footage and sometimes artworks by other artists. The resulting assemblages give new function to and reveal the hidden qualities of outwardly disparate objects. Mirza describes these works as "unfolding compositions in time", with each piece generating a seemingly infinite and distinct field of sound that combines to form a larger musical composition throughout the gallery. Haroon Mirza is shortlisted for the 2010 Northern Art Prize and is participating in the British Art Show 7. | |||||
