May 09 --June 22, 2008
Opening: Thursday, May 08, 2008, 7:00 p.m.
PRESS DATE: Wednesday, May 07, 2008, 11:00 a.m.
On May 8, 2008 for the third time the level On the Spot is opening. The Berlin based artist Heike Bollig presents the first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. Bollig shows a selection of new works specially created for the Kunstverein along with older works which thematize various forms of written and graphic communication in public spaces. Heike Bollig's works are characterized by an approach which is both conceptual and playful. Her interest focuses on the hidden forms and objects of our daily life which she takes up and abstracts in such a way as to direct attention to the aesthetic qualities of these found objects. Thus ever since 2004 the artist has been collecting everyday objects which have a production defect but which, precisely through their divergence from the norm, carry within themselves the potential for deconstructing technical, social and cultural ideologies. The objects of her research Bollig finds in her immediate vicinity and in public space. In her new work for the Kunstverein, Bollig combines the figure of an advertising column with the function of a fountain, for example. Staged as a sculpture in the exhibition space, the column points toward the narrow degree of difference between everyday object and work of art. At the same time, Bollig illustrates the artistic endeavor to comprehend and to transform existing traditions, and to reflect upon the format "exhibition" as a means of self-advertisement.
