Jane Alexander, african adventure
The year 2002 marks the third time DaimlerChrysler has rewarded outstanding artistic achievement in South Africa by conferring special honours on talented individuals. This year´s prize is for sculpture, and it follows two previous awards - for contemporary art and South African jazz.
World-class sculptor Jane Alexander convinced an international jury that the powerful, evocative messages of her work, communicated with a combination of force and subtlety, deserve to be recognised by the DaimlerChrysler 2002 Award for South African Sculpture. It is our devout wish and belief that the DaimlerChrysler Award will provide firm support for the broad international platform she deserves while her wonderful abilities take their natural course.
However, by honouring gifted people in this way DaimlerChrysler
also hopes to convey a message beyond the simple acknowledgement or confirmation of personal ability and artistry. We have a genuine desire to demonstrate in meaningful ways our commitment to the principle of good corporate citizenship. This is of particular significance to us in those regions where proper implementation of constructive social responsibility initiatives makes a real difference.
DaimlerChrysler´s exhibition of exceptional, indigenous South African talent is thus a natural extension of our wider wish to explore, expose and promote that region´s immense potential.
Our South African roots go very deep. Our commitrnent is long-term. Our passion is strong.
These practical as well as idealistic considerations have led us to support the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) - a broad initiative led by South Africa and several other prominent African nations. Accompanied by powerful international support, NEPAD aims at transforming prospects for the continent as a whole by effectively improving competitiveness on a global scale, thus creating sustained prosperity for this region. In making this Award, and by presenting the work of Jane Alexander, we hope to make a small contribution towards this magnificent objective.
