Curator: Miguel von Hafe Perez
Jarbas Lopes, one of the most internationally renowned Brazilian artists, opens now his first solo show in Portugal at Baginski, Galeria / Projectos. He works in the tradition of such artist-activists as Joseph Beuys, whose notion of "social sculpture" views art as a means through which people can shape their society and views social interaction as an art form as well. Jarbas uses whatever art medium and materials suit his purposes, e.g. installations and drawings. He also works in performance, video, music, and poetry.
Standing out are his participations at the São Paulo Biennial, the Habana Biennial and the Pontevedra Biennial, also his artistic residences at the Krinzinger Project in Vienna and at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Miami, as well as his presence in an institutional group show in Portugal, curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
The artist shows his work since 1990 in the Brazilian context (Paço Imperial, RJ; MAMAM, Recife; MAM, RJ; MASP, SP; Paço das Artes, SP; Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, RJ), and he has also realized several solo and group shows in international institutions (ASU Museum of Art, Phoenix, EUA; Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, EUA; Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, UK; Gasworks Gallery, Londres, UK; Parasol Unit, Londres, UK).
He was also chosen to figure in ICECREAM, Phaidon, 2007, as one of the 100 artists to watch out now!
This show is organized in cooperation with Galeria Luísa Strina, São Paulo, Brazil. |
