"I am interested in the idea of the fragility of being and in the sensation of the unstable", so the Basque artist Javier PÉREZ (*1968). The spectator walks alongside blood-red splinters of glass that are spread over the floor and reaches a broken chandelier. On top of it black ravens, vulture-like, seem to disembowel it. This scenery awakens in us the idea of glamour and wealth coming to an end, like a motionless animal turns into something dead. PÉREZ plays with the transformation of materials into new forms and at the same time points out the fragility and fugacity of conditions that once were believed to be fundamental for our life. PÉREZ's works shift along a thin line between two worlds.

This recent exhibition, Post Natura, incorporates drawings, photography, sculptures and installations. They make reference to life in its most elementary sense, how things become something else or fade away and their fundamental phases: birth, life and death. He interlinks and inverses these stages, by exposing them to a metamorphosis of time and imposing their existence several levels of meaning. Hereby he reflects about identity of subsistence and its biological conditions, like pieces "cabeza raíz" or "trans(formaciones)II" show. PÉREZ approaches a symbiosis of human and the rest of the nature.

Quite often personal experiences form a starting point for PÉREZ's pieces. Therefore he makes use of objects and materials of daily life, which he transforms in order to awaken all of our senses. This comes out in his piece "A 60 cm del suelo". Two black, used leather boots made of bronze without shoelaces balancing on a big ball of glass, as if their destiny was to circle the world.
In order to give voice to the true fragments of our reality, PÉREZ not even limits himself as it comes to space. In his exhibition "Mutaciones" in 2004 at the Palacio de Cristal in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reine Sofia, the artist brought his idea of metamorphosis impressively to life, while overcoming boundaries of the glass limited space and therefore bonding with nature. "Rosario (memento mori)", a rosary of 15 meters, whose individual segments consist of skulls, is a further development of the piece "Tempus fugit", that has been part of the exhibition at the Palacio de Cristal. Instead of the crucifix there are two shackles collocated to the chain. It is up to the viewer to interpret the rest: "My art is polysemous and open. Everyone should decide which lecture to read."

PÉREZ's pieces deal with time, life and death, the metamorphosis, the entity and the diversity, with the expansion of the unique and the unchangeable progress up to the beginning. "Each of my works carries the idea of life and death, of nature's cruelty or the tension between two basic incompatible antagonisms. They shift between spiritual and carnal, pure and impure, beautiful and ugly, between attraction and rejection and I try to reconcile these contradictory aspects."
