John Baldessari, 'Legs (Various)', 2000
Collage, 50,5 x 60 cm
john baldessari, big in the world of conceptual art, in the netherlands for the first time since many years outside of the museum circuit. art affairs is pleased to announce a show of new works from the intersection series a.o.
an artist since 1953, baldessari uses photography since the early 70s, making regular daily life his central theme. besides, for many years, he has been teaching at calArts, which under his regime became a prestigious art school. later, he also taught at u.c.l.a.; both schools in los angeles county. many wellknown younger artists pay tribute to him, as can be read in the recently published book jack goldstein and the calArts maffia.
the reason why art affairs is showing baldessari now, is due to the fact, that we have got to know him personally, finding out that he is still very productive, making an interesting body of new work. and this experience we wish to share with our public.
baldessari's photo collages show different subjects juxtaposed - rhytmical structures, provoking a sense of movement. they refer to nature (smoke, fire, sky and water), to animals and to the presumed supprematism of mankind. they mirror the chaotic stream of images, that is inundating us daily. one could ask, what is the relation between the images, what is the deeper meaning? questions, that do not necessarily have to be answered, because these are the artist's choices out of his daily life, which he offers to the public to be interpreted. one thing is for sure, he creates powerful and recognizable images, revealing the hand of the master, a quality that most young artists can only dream of.
it is typical for baldessari, that he always reacts against the stream of acceptation in the arts. in a time where painting is en vogue, he changes to photography and when that becomes the general tendency, he brings back painting into his work, combined with photography.
his maquettes are two-dimensional studies for large works, that are composed of several parts shown together in black metal frames. the maquettes at art affairs, yet all have to be realised in large and by that, both versions are still available!
the prints have been chosen around themes, such as the cliché thinking, or a series of typical american shaded lamps. this latter series consists of paper pieces on a photographical basis, in an edition of only 12, which are handcolored separately in different color combinations, making each piece unique.
for the february issue of kunstbeeld magazine, arjan reinders has written an article on baldessari and also the french magazine 'art.jonction le journal' reviews this show in its jan./feb. issue.
