Jörg Scheibe (born 1966, lives in Berlin) presents HYBRIS / DEBRIS, his third solo exhibition with Spielhaus Morrison Galerie, Berlin. A new catalogue with a text by Dresden-based art historian Johannes Schmidt will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
The oevre of Berlin-based painter Jörg Scheibe develops in two groups of works On large format canvases he renders photographic material that has been entirely distorted through digital manipulation. In a process of instant freezing Jörg Scheibe´s painting reflects the metamorphosis of images in digital dissolution. Exploding futuristic forms turn into techno -landscapes and cyberspace-interiors with sucking and rotating perspectives and the hyperplastic aesthetics of video games stress the viewer´s sense of balance.
The second group of works are the so called "tupperware-pictures", small format canvases with factually and monumentally rendered household goods such as plastic canisters, disposable cutlery or sugar dispensers. In these painterly gentrifications of banal everyday objects Jörg Scheibe however does not reflect upon the ideological consumer critique on brand products, as did the American Pop Art. Like the large digital distortions, the tupperware-pictures are a homage to the surface of the objects as well as to the paintings.
In his painting Jörg Scheibe combines the sublime with the banal. The distorted reflections on the chrome lid of a sugar dispenser shows an astonishing similarity with elaborate computer-aided picture manipulations. And yet, under the surface of their content Jörg Scheibe´s works are always reflections on the medium of painting itself, which becomes manifest in a very elegant body.
