The Complete Program of JUSTMAD2 Fair : 49 galleries from 12 countries
JUSTMAD2, the emerging Contemporary Art Fair will take place in its second edition with the participation of 27 Spanish and 22 foreign galleries, from Stockholm, Berlin, Moscow, New York, Shanghai, Milan, Lisbon, Sao Paulo, Paris or Bogota.
The 2011 program is, as usual with JUSTMAD, very innovative and includes: a new section, JUSTMAD DESIGN, dedicated to contemporary design; METROSound, a sound art project in the Metro of Madrid; and Producers ‘Desks a platform dedicated to sharing experience amongst art professionals from all around the world.
JUSTMAD2 (February 17-20, 2011) will initiate once again a “showcase “format with the objective to give visibility to international young artists and galleries characterized by their innovative spirit. JUSTMAD2 also seeks to generate an open debate between galleries, collectors, art experts and the public in general around contemporary art. This year, 48 galleries from 12 countries will participate in the fair, 27 being Spanish and 22 foreign (USA, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Rumania, Portugal, Italia, Sweden, Russia, China and France).
For Giulietta Speranza, Artistic Director of ARTFAIRS, the company that created JUSTMAD, it has to be noted that “this event coincides with a time where a great number of art lovers happen to be in Madrid”. She adds: “JUSTMAD is very attractive fair as you can visit it thoroughly in less than 2 hours. Moreover, our guests are not only spectators but have the opportunity to mingle with art professionals (curators, artists, critics, et.) on site, as we are trying to create an enjoyable space in which you can interact with interesting people” she says. In its second edition, the fair inaugurates with a team of curators: Javier Duero, Martí Manen y Luiza Teixeira de Freitas. On the concept of the fair, Luiza underlines “the newness, the quality and the consistency of the selected projects”. “I believe JUSTMAD is young, strong and attractive, one of a kind happening in one of the most exciting cities of Europe” she says. Javier Duero adds “our positioning is to take risks and innovate “and Martí mentions “modernity and experimentation both define the fair. It has definitely a very special feeling to it”.
Along with the general program of the fair, a number of events will be organized:
Contemporary design will be present in JUSTMAD2 thanks to a new section with the objective to promote the work of designers who evolve between the world of art and design. JUSTMAD DESIGN will introduce works of contemporary designers. The idea is to bring nearer to the public contemporary design and to encourage new collectors to invest in experimental works, unique pieces or limited editions that add an emotional element to daily objects. The selection of JUSTMAD DESIGN, which include 7 galleries with a maximum of 2 pieces each was made by Ana Domínguez Siemens, a curator and journalist specialized in design, together with David Gill, a London gallerist and Rocío Bardín, a design expert who both acted as advisors. Amongst the designers, great names such as Fredrikson Stallard, Jaime Hayón o Álvaro Catalán de Ocón will be featured.
Along JUSTMAD DESIGN, METRO SOUND, a section specialized in Sound Art will present in the Metro of Madrid pieces of artists that work with sound and music in an experimental way. The initiative defines an urban itinerary in a series of metro stations, which, selected for their location and their specific architecture and acoustics, will form a node of subterranean sounds. In each node, the integrated sound system will be converted into hearing channels, producing a collective esthetic experience. With an approach between hearing immersion and ephemeral listening, this program is a challenge proposed by JUSTMAD to introduce professionals and the public to a first experience with experimental sounds. A map of the itinerary and a specific signage with precise information related to the art will be available at each station, allowing an unparalleled understanding of the relationship between urban space, architecture and sound.
Finally, PRODUCERS’ DESKS will consists in inviting persons and institutions who dedicate to promote the work of international emerging artists, including platforms of production and resources, art residencies, cultural think tanks and editorial projects, in order to encourage a dialogue with the City of Madrid and its cultural agents.
In the current global context, a need to revisit cultural productions’ models and structures was identified. PRODUCERS’ DESKS will focus on “art producers” invited to confront and share their ideas, strategies and initiatives with their counterpart from established economies but also from emerging countries and major partners of the EU. Organizations and platforms from countries such as Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, Mexico or Morocco were selected for being key in generating important regional and international networks and for their collaborative practice that represent new forms of social interactions, cultural exchange and creation.
JUSTMAD was presented for the first time in February 2010 as a new fair in a showcase format, with a selection of young galleries seeking to promote emerging artists. The fair targets collectors and a general public interested and contemporary art savvy. It seeks to not only sell but also to help promote the works featured. JUSTMAD believes in the exchange between the Spanish and the International art scene. In 2010, 12000 visitors attended the fair. JUSTMAD2’s objective is to re-enforce its positioning as a key international event for contemporary art professionals.
