Press Release:

We are very happy to present Unser Haus, the third solo exhibition by the Berlin artist Kerstin Drechsel at the Laura Mars Group. As in her earlier series of paintings Reserve (2001-2004), in the new series Unser Haus Drechsel once again addresses the subject of the organized chaos that is reflected in the arrangement of private rooms. The obsessive urge to collect, to accumulate objects, to build piles as in the "Messy" scenes from Reserve in which a jumble of paper, every-day objects, packages, foodstuffs and toys is scattered about, has an alternative orientation in Unser Haus. In her most recent painting Drechsel presents views of rooms that attest to a distinct interest in film, literature, design and art. Piles of videotapes, books and magazines are clustered around period furniture and technical devices and shape the pictorial space from diverse perspectives. Based on photographic snapshots, Drechsel presents the same objects and segments of rooms again and again, and multiplies them in their totality and in enlargements with various nuances of color. This approach facilitates the emergence of a subjective perception of the images, in which the structures of order and disorder resemble each other in an unsettling manner. Drechselıs paintings combine formal precision and distance with the apparent challenge to become a voyeuristic observer. In order to bring out the abstractness and playfulness of these works, Drechsel emphasizes the brilliancy of the colors and leaves spaces between the surfaces, lines and contours blank. In Drechselıs paintings the rooms overfilled with images from the packaging and magazines are transformed into rooms of the mind shaped by an imaginary architecture, an elusive house of images that is opened to the viewer in the absence of its inhabitants.
