III. ECONOMIES: RESISTANCES July 09 Sepzember 08

Opening:
Friday, July 08 at 7:00 p.m.

Press Preview: Friday, July 08at 11:00 a.m.

What promises does capitalism make to a society? What is the motivation for participation? What interests come to predominate? With the end of the socialist model of the state and of ideological thinking in blocks after 1989, a fundamental criticism of the capitalist system became weak or even powerless.
Eve Chiapello and Luc Boltanski state in their book "Der neue Geist des Kapitalismus" ("The New Spirit of Capitalism") that the artists' criticism of the 1960s and 1970s, with its freedom-oriented demands for autonomy and authenticity, also failed "in the sense that the emancipation of the desires Š did not usher in the beginning of the end of capitalism. In order to believe this, one would have to close one's eyes to how fundamentally freedom constitutes an aspect of the regime of capital and to how closely this capitalist system is connected with that longing upon which a large part of its dynamism is based."

The third chapter of "Critical Societies" is dedicated to this longing, its subjective and social economy, its power of resistance.
