Luis Gordillo, "Parque jurásico", 2009, 248 x 340 cms
Gallery Luis Adelantado is pleased to announced the third exhibition of Luis Gordillo at the Gallery in Valencia. Once again he submerges us in his fantastic creative processes, questioning; painting, abstraction, reality, common sense and even though the creative act. This new project, carefully planned for the Gallery, generates a calculated tour (perhaps centrifugal?) carrying you through the five floors of the gallery.
All the pieces in the show have been conceived from painting, but also from his approach and hybridization of photography and printing techniques, like silkscreen print or monotype.
His work, defined by continuous experimentation and changes in the registers of his production, has been defined as abstraction, a definition that confines a work that goes beyond, eager to discover new artistic horizons. The use of different techniques and procedures has led to the development of a parallel universe where, overcoming abstraction, references to reality or to parts of it, with imagined elements, fully abstract, symbolic or narrative, co-exists on the same level. In short, his own particular language, rich and complex, where he repeatedly represents his obsessions and uncertainties, as a mental cartography.
Born in Seville in 1934, Luis Gordillo has become the benchmark artist of reference of the last decades in Spanish pictorial creation. His particular style, one way or another, has influenced the work of many of the artists in later generations.
After passing through the Faculty of Law, Gordillo begins his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of Seville. During his artistic development, he has shown the ability to assimilate in a personal way the creative languages of the last five decades. Thus in 1958, after a trip to Paris, he came into contact with Informalism, and later on Pop Art, which provided him new means of artistic expression. While configuring his own aesthetics, at the same time he's interested in approaching a new discourse from his knowledge of and interest in psychoanalysis.
The multitude of recognitions received shows the importance of his work, among others are: National prize of Plastic Arts (1981), Prize of Andalusia of Plastic Arts (1991), Gold Medal in Fine Arts (1996), Prize Velázquez (2007), Doctor Honoris Causes from the Fine Arts Faculty in Cuenca (2008). His work is also to be found in some of the most important collections: National museum of Art Reina Sofia (Madrid), Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM), Foundation La Caixa (Barcelona), Chase Manhattan Bank (New York), Patio Herreriano (Valladolid) and Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona.
The Gallery will publish a monographic catalogue that includes the whole project accompanied by a text of the art critic Iván de la Torre Amerighi.
On March 24th at 20:00. Luis Gordillo will be giving a lecture, invited by the prestigious "Club de Encuentros Manuel Broseta" from Valencia.
By invitation only.
