MAIKE FREESS
der tag hat keine schatten
Exhibition: 15.12.2007 - 19.01.2008
Opening: 14th December 2007, 7 p.m.
In the current exhibition DNA presents the Berlin-based artist Maike Freess with recent drawings, as well as photographic and video work.
The multimedia works of Maike Freess focus on the human figure and the facets of its being and acting. In a partially tender, partially parodying manner she portrays bodies and faces, demonstrates actions and gestures, shows persons in the field of tension between their self and their environment. Freess' deliberate (self-) stagings show the typical aspect of a situation, an affection or an identity and accordingly there is always this uneasy feeling of recognition.
She analyses factors determining her objects' identities and reveals their innermost nature by means of distortion or mutation, through exaggeration up to the point of surrealism, or simply through the telling language of gesture. Her figures are marked by their yearnings and desires, they are ruled by their craving for self-fulfilment or communication. But behind the seductive and playful lightness and the tongue-in-cheek irony there is usually the hard reality of failure. |
