About Manuel Arcenegui’s painting
Painting is a mirror of the unconscious. Its mystery lies in the reflection of the reconstruction of reality created by the deepest strata of our minds.
This constant dialogue with oneself and one’s environment is what creation is based upon; constantly questioning the interpretation of our world with a new vision. In short, any artistic expression reveals the authentic essence of human creation.
Manuel Arcenegui, with whom, for many years, I have shared the brotherhood of brushes, is following the true path of authentic creation, that of the reflection of the soul, of the expression of the spirit. His pictorial vocabulary goes back to Caravaggio, Velázquez, Zurbarán and Ribera, in both his chromaticism as well as in the intelligent trajectory of his brushstrokes. And also because he looks for what Ortega called the “condition of eternal life” in the work of art, in work that is well done. It is this awareness that Arcenegui’s painting is based on; the awareness of the value of its execution and the value of its presence, accomplished with extreme sensibility, because art is like love: its restraint is its lack of restraint.
The pictorial mirrors displayed by this artist ―my brother together with Andrés Cillero, whom we miss― are truthful reflections of a history which is updated, what is avant-garde but renewed tradition?, with the modernity of its composition, its point of view, and its making.
