Bernhard Knaus Fine Art is pleased to show in the actual exhibition works of Margret Eicher and Florian Merkel
Main focus of Florian Merkels work is the human figure. Enclosed by a strikt line the created figures seem vaguely familiar to the audience but still remain in an eerly distance to the observer. Contrary to their fashionable clothing, the expressive poses and gestures and displaced proportions make them appear more like fairy tales characters , heroes of the ancient myths or allegories than people from the present day. Surreal scenes and paralleled worlds are merged virtually in the interaction of various tecniques like photography, drawing and painting. Bright colourpanels combine diffrent narratives and emerge the space with a luminous atmosphere.
Margret Eicher is toying with the habits of the viewers. Her inspiration and original are images from current news, pressfotos and icons of the globalised society as well as art history and mythology. Carefully selceted motivs are implemented into large gobelins made in Brussels or digitally imitated Watercoulour paintings. Superman as a fictive celebrity is shown in an impressionist style of watercolour painting; models with fur coats are posing on her tapestries as thought it was a fashion magazin. The unusuale use of message and medium is a contradiction that cause Irritation and confusion in the viewer even at first sight. With her Cimaera she comments in ironical and skilful combination on values of the society and mechanisms of the media. Attracted by the beauty, monstrosity and inability to conform with the new medium, the observer is confronted with his own expectations and asked not to believe his eyes.
The ambiguity and ironic distance of the artists towards their work opens up a new dimension between realities and give new space for own connotation and interpretations.
We would be very glad if the exhibition would be of interest for you.
