Modern Artists Gallery, Berkshire, begin their summer season with a joint exhibition showcasing new work by artist Angela Smith and sculpture by Mark Hall.

Angela Smith is achieving widespread recognition with her unique imagery which combines gloss and enamel paint. She creates sinuous shapes and solid forms which suggest human figures, animals and the built environment. Within the current series, Smith has generated a mysterious 'underworld' of characters all with an untold story which challenges the viewer's interpretation. Confusion and questions over the subject matter are brilliantly contrasted by the beautiful and bold palette which is poured on to the canvas. The power in the myriad of colours and the high gloss finish combine to make a confident physical statement and result in a series of very beautiful and utterly enthralling paintings.

The artist's unique and highly worked technique has resulted in nationwide success. Angela Smith has received some of the highest accolades in the UK contemporary art scene recently winning the Parker Harris prize at the Discerning Eye exhibition, London and featuring in the internationally selected Oriel Davies Open 2012. Her work graced the cover of the May edition of the contemporary art magazine AN Magazine and she is currently shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize. Her work has been accepted in to the Royal Academy Summer Show this year.

Mark Hall's imposing bronze sculpture perfectly juxtaposes the fluidity and sinuous nature of Angela Smith's paintings. Mark has exhibited successfully at Modern Artists Gallery for many years and enjoys international success with his highly prized representations of bronze conkers and other fruit. He has enjoyed wider recognition following recent television exposure on lifestyle programme 'House Gift'. The forthcoming exhibition at Modern Artists Gallery offers visitors the chance to enjoy a greater variety of Mark's work including major installation pieces. The catalogue will extend from small cabinet works priced at 272 to large scale garden commissions. The sculptor has created major works for both private and corporate collections. These full sized bronzes have been shown at Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court, with one piece donated to HRH Prince of Wales for the Prince's Trust Garden.

Both Angela Smith and Mark Hall will be available for interview at the Private View on Saturday 23rd June, 12noon 4pm.
