MARTA KOSSAKOWSKA - "Before / After"
January 10 - 31, 2009
Opening reception - January 10, 2009, 6-9 PM
"She will shoot to you. She'll dissect the color of your iris, open to the daylight and blow away the rests of doubtful pleasures, till finally, swallowed by slimy black you will descend to the floor, hitting your head into empty ceiling."
(video screenplay "Before / After")
Heppen Transfer gallery cordially invites you to the first individual exhibition of polish video artist Marta Kossakowska, "Before / After". Five videos were chosen for the show. Her newest work "Before / After" was shot in our gallery. The artist was inspired by Heppen Transfer's extraordinary interiors as well as an incidentally found old photograph of a young girl in sitting in widespread underpants.
Marta Kossakowska often creates frivolous, light and airy (literally, because levitation holds important place in Martha's imagination) vision of world that crashes with passion, violence and brutality. She is interested in here and now, deals with present. Her videos have clear narrative line, but are very subtle, the artist leaves us open space for interpretations of meanings and used symbols.
Distinctive of Marta Kossakowka's videos is her unusual feeling for rhythm. She not only perfectly mounts the images and arranges music in her videos, but creates the rhythm visually, with the moving image itself. First, the video is mounted, only afterwards the music is arranged. Music is immensely significant in all her works - tracks are often custom-composed by Piotr Tyszko / known as - czlowiekinny/ who composes the music without ever seeing the video. Marta describes the work in mail and sometimes sends him an illustrating photo. This collaboration is based on trust and astounding intuition.
Born in 1983, lives and works in Warsaw. In 2008 graduated with honors from Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the Audiovisual Space Workshop. Her works were exhibited on group exhibitions in Contemporary Art Museum, Warsaw and Zach?ta National Art Gallery in Warsaw.
