Matthew J. Price - New Paintings
"The majority of my subjects are females. I chose this because of the subtle yet complex emotion and beauty they can express. I try to pinpoint certain themes that focus on duality. For instance, the struggle between good and evil, sanity and insanity, tragedy and comedy, strength and fragility...
I've always been drawn to fairy tales, legends, myths, and children's books. I like the limitless nature of imagination in them, the possibility, and the danger. The inspiration from these stories had led me to use my painting as a way of storytelling".
In our ongoing activities, to also promote emerging artists of the OC Region, we decided last year to cooperate with Matthew J. Price, whose dedication and talent equally convinced us. Following his exhibitions at "The Office" Gallery and at "The Grand Central Art Center" in Santa Ana, the OMC Gallery Team is happy to be able to present twenty new paintings to the public.
Price's oil paintings are a true reflection of personal and artistic imagination, border less connecting dreams, reality and fantasy world. His protagonists, mainly of female gender, are appearing as a mixture between grown-ups and children being connected with the past and the present. Their facial expressions, especially the eyes, create the intriguing mystery, wake up our desire to prolonged looking, which then is rewarded with great pleasure and the delivery of secret messages. We don't know whether the girls in the paintings are representing real people and whether they are acting in a real drama, in which they are not required to reveal one true thing about themselves. Instead they leave us looking at Price's world almost like looking back at our own fairy tale of childhood.
As the subject of childhood might touch the depths of our psyche, it also resonates with the particular frequencies of our current history and culture. Here we might be able to differentiate from the artist or totally agree with him. Suggesting that every artist aspires toward the universal and the eternal, every artist also comes from and defines a specific time and space.
Looking at Price's paintings, we might find ourselves moving into his time and space, stepping back, getting closer, shifting positions like this will help us to decode the symbols, in which we recognize something about ourselves and if we let go, we might even merge with the delicate faces of these yet mysterious strangers and discover a whole new world in the virtual space between Matthew Price's paintings and our imagination.
