212GALLERY is pleased to present the video projections of Michael Lipkin entitled, Sublimation.
Lipkins' 4 video panel suite throws reality into abeyance. His works highlight the ephemerality of subjective vision.
Two video screens display minimal, black forms on white textured backgrounds; the other two panels pulse with smooth kaleidoscopic vibrancy. Abstraction. Time suspended. The glass objects that provided Lipkin with the luminous "still life" draw the viewer into continually-moving fuchsia, red, yellow and green explosions and shards. Transitions unfold. Smooth gold pans across the screen reminiscent of hard, smooth sand after a tidal retreat.
Lipkin photographs sculptural forms in 360 degrees to get them "to seem anything but static." The ensuing short films deconstruct the objects from their reality-based and "assigned" three-dimensional roles to their essence - embodiments of shape, movement, light and shadow.
The physical space Lipkin conjures transcends objectivity; the calligraphic forms move with a meditational cadence akin to visual chanting. "I want materials and media to be the opposite of what they're supposed to be," says Lipkin. "I want sculpture to move - to change. I want to create still life's that aren't still. I want objects to articulate light. I want to see time...and capture change."
This collection brings together Lipkins ongoing fascination with composition, light, choreography; time and movement. The rhythm and pacing of his videos are long enough to intrigue but gone before you have been sated. For Lipkin, art is, as in life, a balance between control, experimentation, and discovery. Sublimation captures the transformative moment between them all.
Michael Lipkin is an architect, designer, photographer, print maker, sculptor, and lifelong student of the visual arts and music. He received his undergraduate degree in Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University. He currently resides in Aspen.
