 Minnamari Toukola, Untitled, 2012, collage, 44 x 60 cm | | |
Minnamari Toukola is a Helsinki based artist born in 1982. She is currently finishing her studies at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in the department of painting. She has had her first solo exhibition this year at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts Gallery and has taken part in a few group exhibitions in Finland. She is a prominent up-and-coming artist and her works deserve wider attention.
Toukola's works vary from paintings, to installations and from mixed media collages to textile works with none of the works solely representing a medium but rather stretching and widening their aspect. She joyously makes interruptions and transitions within different mediums. A range of techniques is used from drawing to stitching, weaving, painting and sculpting. She mainly uses found materials or pieces of former objects that have caught her attention to put it more precisely. A piece of colourful string, a chip of a porcelain saucer, fabric or nature made materials such as bits of wood, leaves and sticks will find their specific place in each carefully constructed work of art. It is as if she was putting pieces together to form an on going puzzle that could resemble the life itself. |
