Mustafa Maluka, Why do you tear me from myself, 2009, oil on canvas, 61 x 46 cm
Galerie bertrand & gruner is pleased to announce a new body of work by Mustafa Maluka. Known for theatrically confronting the intersection of contemporary critical theory and global politics with his provocative portraits, the artist returns to Geneva with a new body of work entitled, "The Rhetoric of Sincerity/The Sincerity of Rhetoric".
Combining art historical and cultural sources, Maluka engages the viewer with current manifestations of sincerity and its ramifications within the real world. This new body of work is a journey that takes the viewer on a long walk from rhetoric to reality. Maluka puts sincerity to work in his paintings, presenting a cast of characters enacting a response to his call in a performance that seeks authenticity and truth.
Currently living and working between New York and Helsinki, self-described "Global Citizen" Mustafa Maluka (1976) grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, but came of age in Amsterdam, the Netherlands where he studied at De Ateliers and the University of Amsterdam.
