Self-determination and censorship, the strict separation between public and private spaces, the questioning of traditional values in a changing urban context: the relation of the individual and the norms set up by religion and politics often determines the entire social reality in the Islamic world. The exhibition “Nafas. Contemporary Art from the Islamic World” presents artists’ approaches to tackling these themes. For the time being, the exhibition completes the series “Islamic Worlds” in the ifa galleries Berlin and Stuttgart. “Nafas” is part of a projects that is conceptually connected to the online magazine “Contemporary Art from the Islamic World”, which is published by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations in collaboration with Gerhard Haupt and Pat Binder on their website “Universes-in-Universes – Worlds of Art” since 2004. In the exhibition, computer terminals will be made available in addition to the presented works, providing access to the contents of the online magazine. Thus, the visitors are offered the possibility to learn more about the presented works, their creators as well as about other artists from the Islamic world that are concerned with similar themes or represent comparable artistic positions.

Participants:
Lida Abdul (Afghanistan/USA), Ebtisam AbdulAziz (United Arab Emirates), Vyacheslav Akhunov (Uzbekistan), Mounir Fatmi (Morocco/France), Amal Kenawy (Egypt), Nur Hanim Mohamed Khairuddin (Malaysia), Waheeda Malullah (Bahrein), Anas Al-Shaikh (Bahrein), Suha Shoman (Jordan).

The catalogue, comprising 80 pages with numerous illustrations, is available for 9 Euro.
